Why Do We Have Bad Habits?

Why Do We Fall Prey To Bad Habits?

Ever thought why do people fall prey to wrong habits so quickly while good habits are difficult to inculcate and sustain? Instead of finding the root cause, the medical science dumps it all on hormonal imbalance, which, to some extent is true as well but not entirely.

One of the biggest problems these days is to get caught in the web of medications, in my opinion, there is absolutely nothing that cannot be healed organically and naturally, just that getting to the root cause takes longer and most people lose patience. After a while, a person gets addicted to medication to an extent that a person feels he/she will never be able to get out of it.

The cycle of habit is something that can be understood only via yoga practice. The purpose of yoga and meditation is to find out the faulty pattern in the senses, to spot such an overactive activity of the senses that may give rise to ailments. Identify such an activity that a person may unknowingly be repeating the entire day, such as chewing paan, smoking, et cetera. The idea is to go beyond and try to figure out what does the brain actually want that it is getting addicted to things, substances and activities.

In my observation, repetitive behaviour is a way to pacify and calm down an overactive brain, rather, distract it. Usually, people are not taught 'chintan', which means deep observation or going into the depth of thoughts, that is why the brain resorts to such temporary things and the senses keep meandering amid activities aimlessly.

Excessive chewing, masturbation, using the jaw, in fact, excess of anything to quieten the mind is not a holistic, sustainable and long term solution. The inner mind cannot be numbed out of situations and circumstances through external agents, the solution is within.

Once the mind is focused on something, it is important for the mouth or the jaw to move. The deeper the mind goes into an experience, the calmer the body and the senses become.

Here are some vital tipe to ensure freedom from all bad habits and achieving a calmer self

  • If you have decided to work toward a goal, then be sure to stick to it. Success is not promised quickly, therefore, patience and perseverance is important.

  • Increase in depth understanding in the business you have chosen for success and make the development of your own mind the basis only.

  • Be sure to include yoga and pranayama in your routine to bolster patience, clarity of thoughts and peace of mind.
