This is a kind of pranayama where the practitioner produces sound through the mouth. The priority of the sound is given prominently in the brain and is associated with the breath. While speaking, the help of throat, tongue, teeth and lips is taken, but in this pranayama, the throat and lips are used.
In my experience, Om Pranayama is more rapid, subtle and effective than any other Pranayama in which only breath is used. One of the primary reasons for this is that there is more subtle sound than gaseous matter and at the same time, its speed is very fast. This is why when an effort is made to send the vibrations of sound to the brain, its impact is great. It is also because there is no true false sentimentality attached to it. It only has a neutral sound that would go to the brain. The practice of Om pranayama has a very soothing and relaxing effect on the brain.
In my observation, Om pranayama can heal the brain with the help of sound vibrations. It may also help eliminate the congestion in the nerves and normalize the glands located in the neck, pituitary and adrenal gland.
Medical science supports the fact that due to the imbalance of the thyroid and the pituitary glands, digestion, as well as the system of waste elimination, gets impacted. Besides this, the ill effects also impact the heart, liver, among other important body parts and processes. All this gives rise to heart ailments, hormonal imbalance, irregularities in blood sugar levels, anaemia, et cetera.
Memory issues may often arise due to problems in the pituitary gland. Om pranayama can help tackle this issue. People battling migraine and hypertension get a lot of relief by practising this pranayama.
The Pranayama should be done in the morning on an empty stomach in a clean, airy and quiet place while sitting upright and closing the eyes. Take a deep breath in, after that the sound of 'o' should come out slowly, then after that the sound of 'm' should be out. Take out the sound of 'O' from the mouth and close the sound of 'M' from the nose. That is, starting the sound with 'o', take it till 'm'. This is called Om Pranayama.
The sound of 'o' affects the nerves of the neck and the glands while the sound of 'm' affects the inside of the head. This pranayama is very beneficial for diseases related to throat and head. It even controls the tendency of increased phlegm.
Begin by practising the pranayama at least 11 times and increase it gradually. After 15 days it can be done for 2 minutes and after a month you can practise it for 11 up to 21 minutes.
If the practitioner is able to practice one round in 20 seconds or more then the progress of pranayama is considered good. As the lung capacity increases, one can take one round to around 45 seconds or more. However, make sure that the pranayama is not done in a hasty manner. Ensure that the mind is free from any distractions. Full benefits of pranayama are achieved only when the mind is free from distractions.
Once pranayama is over, let your mind drift into the state of zero and sit with eyes closed. You can even lie down to practise Yoga Nidra. Breathe easily and experience cool breath while inhalation and warm while exhalation. In order to see the impact of a regular practice of Om pranayama, one can try getting a health check after three months of regular practice.
