From a social perspective, a wise and experienced member of a household or ashram is seen to always be seated. It is as if they are seated on a storehouse of experiences. Their body, senses, and mind are in a state of calm. In Indian civilization, such individuals are considered to be their gurus, who possess stability and a storehouse of experience and knowledge.
This is why all members of the household consider them their protector. Advice is sought from them because they have experienced happiness and sorrow from a close distance, and have attained stability as a result. It is as if they are seated on their life experiences. These experiences help a person protect their life and society.
If looked at from a spiritual perspective, a realized seeker or a knowledgeable yogi sits on an infinite ocean of thoughts and memories. Thoughts cannot touch him, but he has the right to touch them. He does not get lost in his memories but has the power to neutralize the emotions hidden in them. Generally, people become emotional when they enter their memories, which causes them to experience pleasure and pain. This leads to restlessness in their senses and mind. But only a knowledgeable and experienced yogi can destroy the emotions in his memories by going into them.
He sits on top of his infinite thoughts based on his own experiences. In the language of yogis, this is called being impartial, meaning sitting on the bank of the river with a witnessing attitude. Here, Vishnu ji is sitting in an unaffected state in the boundless ocean, and is not affected by what is happening in society. The events of society do not touch him, but he has the ability to set things right in society. Just as a knowledgeable person cannot be swayed by thoughts, he does sway thoughts, and uses them to his advantage. The person who sits in the centre does not sway or waver much, as the centre is always stable. The one who is in the periphery is unstable.
When a person realizes that he has created his own thoughts, it means he is sitting in the centre. He can control the thoughts as he is the controller. But when a person is under the illusion that his thoughts are controlling him, then he is in the periphery. Then he begins to be controlled by thoughts.
Here, the spiritual meaning of the sea is ‘memory’, and the meaning of sitting is to sit calmly without any mental duality. Additionally, it is also necessary to mention here what is the meaning of Lord Vishnu sitting on a serpent.
Without any foundation, one cannot sit in water. Some kind of support is needed to sit. The human memory is deeper and immeasurable than the ocean, filled with both joy and sorrow. Some kind of support is needed to sit on it. In my personal experience, only knowledge is the support to remain neutral towards memories and thoughts. It is known as the Kundalini serpent in Yoga, a type of hidden knowledge within oneself that protects oneself. This same knowledge (serpent) emerges and sits upon all these thoughts.
