The Navel and Dharan

The Navel and Dharan Center: A Yogic Perspective on Energy and Balance

Student: Guruji, you mentioned the navel or Dharan center is very important for our physical and mental well-being. But can this be connected to modern science?

Yogi Anoop: Absolutely. Modern science recognizes the importance of the navel, though it approaches it differently. For example, the umbilical cord connects the baby to the mother during pregnancy, providing oxygen and essential nutrients. It is a lifeline. After birth, even though the physical connection is severed, the navel region remains energetically and functionally important.

Student: How does that work in scientific terms?

Yogi Anoop: Modern anatomy acknowledges that the navel lies close to significant internal organs such as the intestines, liver, and diaphragm. It is near the solar plexus, a crucial nerve center in the body. This area, known as the celiac plexus in modern science, regulates many involuntary bodily functions like digestion, circulation, and energy distribution.

Student: So, the solar plexus is connected to the nervous system?

Yogi Anoop: Yes, it is a network of nerves that plays a significant role in managing stress, digestion, and energy flow. When the navel center (or Dharan) is misaligned, it can impact these vital systems. Modern science also links stress and digestive disorders to disturbances in the nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve, which runs through the abdomen and controls much of the digestive process.

Student: Wow, that aligns perfectly with what you said earlier about stress and pulling in the abdomen unconsciously!

Yogi Anoop: Exactly! Mental stress activates the nervous system, causing abdominal tension. This disrupts the natural rhythm of digestion, creating issues like constipation, bloating, or loss of appetite. It is scientifically proven that chronic stress can weaken the digestive system and impact organs like the liver and intestines.

Student: And what about the liver, Guruji? How does the liver fit into this?

Yogi Anoop: Modern science tells us that the liver is a powerhouse of the body. It processes nutrients, detoxifies the blood, and stores energy. During pregnancy, as I mentioned, the liver is the first organ to receive energy through the umbilical cord. Even after birth, the liver continues to depend on a healthy digestive system, which is regulated by the Dharan or navel center. When there is stress, misalignment, or pressure in this area, it disturbs liver function, leading to problems like fatty liver or sluggish digestion.

Student: That makes sense. So, is it fair to say that the navel is not just a spiritual center but also has a strong connection to modern biology?

Yogi Anoop: Yes. From a yogic perspective, the navel is the Manipura Chakra, the center of energy and willpower. Modern science supports this idea through its understanding of the nervous system, the solar plexus, and the digestive organs. The energy flow in this region directly influences physical health, mental clarity, and emotional stability.

Student: Guruji, this connection between yoga and science makes everything so clear! But how can we fix issues like navel displacement or weakness scientifically and naturally?

Yogi Anoop: Yoga provides the most practical and effective solutions, which are backed by science:

1. Yoga Asanas – These help strengthen the core, improve digestion, and realign the muscles around the navel:

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), Pawanmuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose)

Modern science shows that these poses stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, improving digestion and reducing stress.

2. Pranayama – Breathing exercises like Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and Turtle Pranayama help calm the nervous system, reduce abdominal tension, and improve oxygen supply to the organs.

3. Lifestyle Changes – Focus on managing stress. Modern studies confirm that stress management techniques, such as yoga and meditation, lower cortisol levels and improve overall digestive health.

4. External Remedies – Using Hing (asafoetida), Ajwain (carom seeds), and Triphala supports digestion and relieves bloating, something that even Ayurveda and modern naturopathy recommend.

Student: Guruji, it’s incredible how ancient practices align so well with modern science. So, by practicing yoga and pranayama, we are not only balancing the Dharan center but also improving our overall health scientifically.

Yogi Anoop: Exactly. When you combine yogic wisdom with modern science, you get a complete, holistic approach to health. The Dharan center is not just a concept—it’s a vital energy hub, scientifically and spiritually. With consistent practice, you will experience better digestion, a calmer mind, and improved energy levels.
