The Mystery of Navel

The Mystery of the Navel and Dharan

Student: Guruji, what is the connection between the navel and mental health?

Yogi Anoop: That’s a great question! The navel is not just the center of our body; it is also a crucial source of energy balance. It is not only related to physical health but also has a deep impact on mental well-being. Let’s understand this in detail.

The Navel: Center of Energy

Just as the thumb is the primary base among the five fingers—being slightly separate yet essential for grip—without it, human hands would function much like animal limbs.

Similarly, the navel in our body can be considered in the same way. I see it as a pillar. You can consider it a source of energy, often referred to as the “Sun” (Surya). Like the sun, it generates energy. Despite not being a visible organ, it is the fundamental source of inspiration for the liver and intestines.

In my experience, the most significant benefits of proper digestion and elimination are seen in the brain itself. This is because balanced digestion and elimination provide complete nourishment and energy to the brain. When the brain receives proper physical nourishment, it facilitates mental and spiritual growth through the process of contemplation.

The Brain and the Influence of Water Element

Notice that the digestive process is driven by fire (Agni), whereas the process of contemplation is influenced by water and air. The brain and senses are significantly impacted by the water and air elements, while the navel and liver region are governed by fire. My yogic practice suggests that maintaining this balance is the key to good health.

It is also important to understand that fire is present in water in the form of temperature. For example, warm water contains an indirect presence of fire as heat. Similarly, all fluids in the body contain heat as temperature. Otherwise, if this heat were absent, these fluids would freeze, leading to death.

Our eyes float in water, and without it, they wouldn’t function. If the mouth lacked saliva, speaking or even eating would become impossible. The entire digestive process—from the mouth to the stomach—depends on the presence of this water element.

Air is responsible for movement, but without water, this movement would not be possible in the body. Moreover, life cannot exist without maintaining a balanced temperature in this water. The body must maintain an optimal temperature for survival. For example, blood, when drawn out, is warm because it has a slightly higher temperature. If this temperature drops too low, it can be fatal.

This is why fire (the navel) is a crucial element that regulates temperature throughout the body. As a result, life is sustained. The navel plays a significant role in maintaining this balance.

The Navel and Energy Balance

I consider the navel as a center of kinetic energy. When this energy remains dormant, it leads to digestive and elimination issues. However, when this energy—though indirectly present in the center—is activated, visible results can be seen. Many diseases can be cured, or in some cases, they heal on their own.

In yogic practices, the navel region is balanced. However, sometimes, in an unscientific approach to yoga or Hatha yoga, excessive imbalance between the navel and the center of gravity is created, leading to the onset of diseases. Some people misunderstand this imbalance as a “beginning of transformation,” causing confusion within themselves.

However, a scientifically practiced form of yoga is fully capable of generating kinetic energy in the navel center.

On the other hand, meditation absorbs and calms this thermal energy. As the flow of thoughts decreases, the secretion of fluids in the glands and their circulation become balanced. This also regulates the chemical flow in the body, leading to the experience of potential energy in the navel system. This, in turn, enhances the power of the liver and intestines.

It is true that traditional medicine includes practices such as navel massage and oil application. However, these procedures should only be performed under expert supervision; otherwise, they can have harmful and extremely dangerous effects.

Deep Sleep and Navel Energy

It is crucial to understand that during deep sleep, the connection between the two functions of the brain—tension and relaxation—temporarily breaks for a few hours.

Deep sleep only occurs when relaxation reaches a certain threshold. Upon waking from deep sleep, the energy channels originating from the navel start releasing stress hormones, which help the body transition back into a wakeful state. Without this, once a person enters deep sleep, it would be impossible to wake up again.

I call this the “direction of the sun.” Just as the sun, by moving in its direction, awakens life, the energy of the navel plays a similar role in awakening the body and mind.

Yoga and Meditation for Navel Balance

To maintain navel balance, I recommend a holistic approach that includes:

1. Scientific practice of yoga, pranayama, and meditation.

2. Improving deep sleep.

3. Strengthening the lower back to prevent frequent weakening of the navel.

4. Controlling gas and gastric issues, avoiding excessive burping.

5.Maintaining mental peace and stability.

The navel is not just the body’s center of gravity; it governs overall energy balance. It affects digestion, blood circulation, and brain function. By incorporating the right yoga, meditation, and lifestyle practices, the navel can remain balanced, ensuring mental peace and sustained energy.
