In a bid to make any theory prevalent in society, its super-features are told so that it can be easily accepted by the common people. Many a time, it happens that in doing so the crux of a theory or the basic truth gets hidden and unnecessary things begin to circulate in the society which people mistake for truth. In this blog, I aim to demystify the many misconceptions associated with the practice of shambhavi mudra and bring out its true features and benefits.
To begin with, let me state that one of the primary aims of this practice is to bring about changes in hormones by impacting the brain through the eyes. The brain gets exhausted because of the activities of the eyes. Eyes are the primary source of information to the brain, even in a state of dream, the eyes that are in function and involve the brain as well, as a result, the brain gets tired. In this blog, I shall talk about the ways through which this pranayama can help reduce mental stress by relaxing the eyes as well as the brain.
In this stage, people who are not well-versed with yoga or pranayama are made to exercise this technique. The practitioners are asked to slowly move their eyes up and down, left and right but extremely slowly, say in about 10-20 seconds while moving the eyes from down to up, so on and so forth. By controlling the speed of the motion of the eyes, all internal parts of the eyes also begin to come in control. The faster the motion of the eyes, the weaker the control over it and as a result, the mind also turns very agile, in a way, fickle.
In this stage when considerable control is established on the eye movement, then an attempt is made to stabilize the eyes with slow movements and by concentrating on one point so that the muscles around the eyes are exercised for a longer period of time. Through this, tension is also created in the inner part of the eyes.
Whenever any sensory organ is stopped for more than a particular time, it begins to tremble, this vibration arises because there is a lack of capacity in that particular organ. To develop this ability, the movement of a particular organ (eyes) is stopped. This vibration gives mental stability by increasing the power of the brain.
When eyes are made to stop and focus in different directions and on different objects, then the minutest parts of the brain associated with eyes get activated and refreshed.
When this technique is practised for unnecessary purposes other than spiritual, it triggers a host of ailments. One of the biggest misconceptions tied to this mudra is that after successfully mastering this mudra one gets the ultimate wisdom tied to ghosts, occult and future-telling as well the planetary motion and speed and what not. I strongly urge people to understand a yogic technique thoroughly, understand its significance and way to practice it through a knowledgeable guru and not get caught in the toxic cobweb of misconceptions and myths.
