Dialogue Between Yogi Anoop and Disciple: Secrets of Kriya Yoga
Disciple: Gurudev, what is Kriya Yoga? Does it only mean practicing certain techniques?
Yogi Anoop: No, my child. Kriya Yoga is not limited to techniques alone. The term “Kriya” means specific action, and “Yoga” generally means union. However, in deeper terms, the purpose of this yoga is detachment from action. When the doer performs an action but experiences detachment from it and begins to feel a state of non-doership, that is the real yoga.
This means that the doer, through the action, has now settled into their true nature, i.e., the state of non-doership. In other words, the doer separates from the sense of being the doer and, through Kriya Yoga, establishes themselves in inaction. This is the state of stillness, where the mind becomes completely stable and peaceful.
Disciple: Can hormonal imbalances be controlled through Kriya Yoga?
Yogi Anoop: Logically speaking, experiencing stillness indicates that the senses (both action-oriented and knowledge-oriented) have become calm and stable. The stability and calmness of these senses mean that unnecessary chemical and nervous changes within the brain and spine have largely stopped. This happens because thoughts are what drive neurons to become hyperactive.
When thoughts cease, and stillness is experienced, emotional pressure is also almost entirely relieved. In this state, the unnecessary secretion of hormones from the adrenal glands is controlled. This stillness also regulates the fight-or-flight responses and balances the overactive demand for dopamine.
Thus, practicing Kriya Yoga not only brings mental stability but also naturally balances hormonal imbalances.
Disciple: Can Kriya Yoga eliminate emotional and any type of addiction?
Yogi Anoop: From my own experience, the experience of stillness (motionlessness) eliminates all forms of emotional pleasure and pain addictions. For an ordinary immature mind, the primary source of happiness is emotions. These emotions stimulate the release of hormones like dopamine, adrenaline, and oxytocin. The excessive secretion of these hormones can increase addictions such as overeating or consuming drugs, such as sugar addiction.
Let me explain this with an example: if a person experiences a wave of emotional pleasure, the hormone dopamine begins to secrete within them. This secretion prompts them to consume sweet foods. Even during the fight-or-flight state, the excessive secretion of adrenaline naturally increases the desire to eat sweets. After consuming sweets, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or engaging in activities like sex or masturbation, they feel temporary peace. This takes their happiness to a peak.
However, when this “high” ends, the person falls into extreme sadness and a low-feeling mode. As a result, they repeat the same action, which becomes an addiction.
But if, through the practice of Kriya Yoga, they experience stillness and transcend emotions—even without drugs—they will no longer be influenced by emotions, and the unnecessary secretion of hormones will stop.
It is true that the chemical responsible for the experience of stillness, commonly called serotonin, becomes maximally balanced. From my experience, the feeling of stillness balances this chemical, and inversely, when this chemical increases and balances, the experience of stillness naturally occurs. It even enables one to rise above emotions and transcend motion.
This indirectly controls all hormones related to activity. When a person experiences stillness and transcends thoughts, their happiness and mental and physical energy naturally increase. Additionally, due to the absence of reactions from the senses, their happiness remains stable. In this state, the person naturally gains the strength to fight any disease.
Disciple: Gurudev, how does Kriya Yoga activate neurons, and what effect does it have on the body and mind?
Yogi Anoop: When practicing Kriya Yoga, which involves pranayama and meditation (visualization), it activates neurotransmitters like serotonin located in the brain and spine. This process specifically works on the subtle centers in the spine that control the flow of thoughts and emotions.
These neurotransmitters are the primary medium for the exchange of information and emotions between the brain and the body. When this flow becomes calm and stable through the practice of Kriya Yoga, naturally, chemicals like serotonin—associated with stability—become more active in the brain.
Since neurotransmitters are freed from the influence of thought flow, neuroplasticity increases. In this state, all chemical processes in the body become spontaneously active, similar to how these chemicals naturally rejuvenate during deep sleep.
Take deep sleep as an example. The moment the mind transcends thoughts, even for a short while, its activity is halted through Kriya Yoga. Similarly, chemical changes occur most profoundly in the spine and brain. Deep sleep can be used as a basic example to understand this.
Scientifically, serotonin is responsible for mental stability, emotional balance, and peace of mind. Activating it allows one to transcend thoughts and tendencies, leading to mental peace and clarity.
Disciple: Does the practice of Kriya Yoga also affect hormones?
Yogi Anoop: The practice of Kriya Yoga teaches visualization and pranayama for action. It does not involve any form of emotional engagement. For example, listening to music evokes emotions, but in Kriya Yoga, no pleasant or unpleasant emotions are involved. Instead, the practice focuses on visualization during action, enhancing concentration within the transmitters of the spine and brain.
Where emotions arise, hormonal secretion increases. For instance, listening to music increases hormonal secretion. However, practices like Kriya Yoga, which induce stillness through concentration, have a greater impact on activating neurons.
It is also true that serotonin, the chemical responsible for stability, when balanced, has a positive and stabilizing effect on hormones as well.
I prioritize stillness the most because when it is achieved, all other accomplishments follow naturally. Even adrenaline hormones are automatically regulated. However, this is a result of the increase in stillness.
This is why I say that the effects of Kriya Yoga are more precise and intense than those of hormones because it directly activates the nervous system and neurotransmitters. This is why its practice is extremely effective for both mental and physical health.
