How To Resolve Constipation Through 'Tyag' 

What is tyag or renunciation in Gyan Yoga? It is that the mind should be able to quit substances. When the mind gives up all the things going on in it, then it becomes relaxed and calm. All tensions are resolved. When the mind prepares to give up things, even the body gets into such a mode, the intestines throw out the faeces, dirt comes out from the skin, the liver and lungs etc. The thing is that whether the mind is capable of renouncing things or not, here the matter is not of external renunciation, but about relinquishing thoughts.


In Nidra science, 'Tyag' means to give up. In sleep, the mind automatically renounces all things completely. If one sleeps very deeply, it will be impossible to be constipated. In deep sleep, even for a few hours, ideological renunciation helps organs also in giving up.

It is necessary to abandon the thoughts and feelings that have been received throughout the day for a few moments at night, otherwise, diseases are certain. 


Constipation is closely tied to the repetition of thoughts. Out of ignorance, due to so much repetition of one thought, the contraction in the intestines starts increasing. Complete renunciation of mind is when there is a complete halt on thoughts. But when the repetition of a particular idea goes on for hours and hours, then where is the renunciation? Then where did the mind leave the thoughts? As long as the mind does not drop thoughts completely, it cannot get complete rest. 


An important thing to note here is that the rectum, the anus and the excretory system are by nature in the habit of giving up. Thoughts, on the other hand, get accumulated in the body and when too many thoughts get accumulated, the same pattern gets translated into the bodily processes as well, as a result, constipation plagues the body. 


Renunciation or giving up is very pleasurable, blissful, it can be experienced when the stomach is clean. When the anus is made to contract and relax, then the habit of releasing and discarding is formed in it. When the mind gives up things for a short time, then it becomes a habit in the body too. When the mind holds things and keeps them inside for a longer time, then for the same time the contraction in the rectum remains.


What is Tyag in Medical Sense

Renunciation or tyag in medical science means giving up physical stress. To give up whatever unnecessary tension is in the body, that is, to relax. The purpose of yoga asana or any physical exercise is to relax the tension inside the body and nerves. In order to eliminate the already existing tension in the body, some more tension is given so that the muscles and nerves come back to their original form. How much stress to take and when can be learned from an experienced guru.

To come to a state of relaxation, one needs practice, whereas to give stress and tension is easy. 


Whether it is traditional science or modern, when stress leaves the body then many ailments get resolved. Stress and tension are the biggest causes of ailments. But it does not mean here that tension and stress should not be given, if tension is there then there should an outlet to relax it. You also have to practice letting go of stress. In medical science, stress can be called attachment and renunciation of a stress-free state. When you relax the parts of the body, it means that you have given up the tension of those parts.


What I mean to say is that we must teach our body, senses to give up stress and relax, only then is detoxification possible. 


Here are some tips: 
  • Constrict the anus before sleeping, hold it for a while and then relax it. Note that this relaxation should be at least 30 seconds. Here you can relax not only that tension by stretching the anus, but also the tension which has remained constant from the mind before that.
  • Observe your breath before sleeping. Your skin's tension is released most by observing the breath. The release of the tension of the skin means that the intestines have started to release the stool.
  • Do not strain the jaw, if it is, try to de-stress it. There are many methods of meditation for that. Practice it.
  • Give up those foods to which the tongue has become very accustomed. Give food to the tongue whose taste it does not like.
  • Practice such ease in yoga that can make the waist forceful and flexible. Like Paschimottanasana. Bhujang asana. Arrow asana. Do abdominal breathing, chest to abdomen breathing in Pranayama. Note that before practising all these, one must consult a guru nearby.
  • People suffering from constipation need to adjust their night routine more at night than in the morning. These types of people consume some digestive powder at night. Instead, get into the practice of renunciation of the mind, senses and body. See how quickly a good decision turns out to be.
