Prayer is a word that instantly evokes thoughts of God, a higher power, or deities. But what is its real meaning? When we pray, are we truly communicating with an external force, or is this dialogue happening within ourselves? The essence of prayer lies in it being a way of talking to oneself. On one hand, we perceive ourselves as weak and helpless, while on the other, we accept ourselves as a higher power. The person doesn’t realize that they are standing on both sides. It’s merely a play of thoughts.
The Purpose of Prayer
In my experience, the purpose of prayer is not to inform God of anything but to allow oneself to pass through their other, calmer and more fluid side. If the ultimate power is omniscient, what is the point of communicating with it? It already knows everything. It is already familiar with every emotion, every thought, every struggle we go through. So, why pray at all?
Prayer exists because, in times when situations do not favor us, we seek solace from a power that can provide peace and comfort. Since unfavourable conditions make us feel weak, in such moments, prayer becomes a way to awaken the calmer and more powerful side within us. It is in this moment that we converse with ourselves, trying to direct the thoughts and emotions swirling within us. This is essential for our mental and spiritual well-being.
When the flow of thoughts is overwhelming during adverse times, the concept of prayer allows us to calm and console ourselves indirectly. Prayer helps us escape from the severe situation.
Dialogue with Oneself – Healing of the Soul
When we pray, we don’t realize that we are essentially talking to ourselves. We are communicating with the parts of our soul that often remain suppressed. Through prayer, we attempt to heal our soul. It is a form of self-acceptance, where we bring forward our inner struggles, worries, and unexpressed emotions.
Prayer is not a medium for seeking help from others. It is a path to connect with our own soul, one that brings a sense of lightness. When we lay bare our feelings before God, we are, in reality, doing so before ourselves. We are trying to recognize our soul. It is a way to acknowledge the state of awareness that resides within us.
