Overthinking Is An Obstacle

Overthinking Is An Obstacle in Sadhana

‘Thinking’ is the biggest obstacle in sadhana and self-cultivation. The more one thinks, the more he goes away from himself, this is because the thinker can never think of himself. Thinking can only be of other objects that are visible and tangible.

When we think, we are able to recreate a copy of an object with the help of the five senses. The same is not possible with the self, how can one recreate a copy of self? A regular sadhak tries to create an image of self and begins to worship it. Instead of getting closer to the self, understanding it, he tries to understand it through the medium of imagination. Some gurus suggest seeing the soul in every human being which means you are forcing the brain and senses to think.

The mind begins to give different forms to the soul, saying that it is formless. But it is true that it is not possible to think about oneself because he can never be seen, he is the one who has seen everyone, then how can anyone see him? When he is not panchendriyagamya then he cannot have sympathy. You can't even smell it because it smells, you can't even touch it because it touches everyone, it can't be tasted because it tastes.

Thinking itself is an obstacle for a Sadhaka (Spiritual Practitioner). The aim of sadhna is to go away from all thoughts, to be thoughtless. Focussing on something, or trying to imagine something in sadhna does not let the brain and the mind move away from thoughts. If a sadhak thinks of something this means it has a connection to it somewhere in his subconscious, that he wants to attain it, achieve it. This is the biggest obstacle. All things may be attainable to man but how can he attain himself for good?

The knowledge of self dawns upon us when the activity of thinking is stopped but how can this be achieved? We must understand that the process of understanding is not thinking but that of observation. Similarly, the seeker makes the object a shield for his own knowledge. Knowledge of the self without any subject is impossible.

How can one experience oneself without the body and the senses?

That is why man is dependent on nature for his own knowledge. It is nature that makes man know himself. Take note of the following points:

  • The body cannot experience its own body.

  • The soul that experiences the pleasures and sorrows of the body is the same.

  • Eyes do not see their own eyes, being able to see the external world only means that both eyes have the ability to see.

  • Loosen the eyes and jaws and thoughts will calm down.

“Thinking in sadhana can be reduced and ended only when self-understanding increases”
