I call saliva the body's natural antacid. Not only it keeps the tract from the mouth to the throat and below moist but also alkaline. Alkalinity helps in protecting a person from numerous ailments tied to the mouth and the throat. If you observe, a baby produces a lot of saliva and as one grows older, this alkalinity turns into acidity which triggers bad breath, mouth ulcers, gum bleeding, persistent sore throat, acid reflux, among other issues.
Others resort to chewing paan and tobacco and further worsen the situation. Some people even sleep while keeping tobacco in their mouth, all this is extremely harmful to the body and increases the level of acid in the mouth. In case the level of acid increases in the body, it could lead to acid reflux which, when unchecked, may even give rise to lifestyle ailments such as cancer. A low level of alkalinity in the mouth may increase the chances of oral cancer.
One thing which I would like to point out here is the role of anxiety. Anxiety and stress can literally wreak havoc in our life. It can throw the body out of balance and trigger numerous ailments. Anxiety can be the biggest and most commonly unexplained cause of acidity and issues tied to stomach, bloating, bad breath, oral cancers, among others. At night, when a person is asleep, acid travels back to the mouth. Many people often observe mouth ulcers in the morning, which is nothing but an indication of an increased level of acidity in the body.
Some Useful Tips
Some easy tips and a disciplined lifestyle can help keep the problem of acidity at bay. Take a look at the following points:
Eat at least two hours before bedtime so that the food is digested.
Do not watch any screen after dinner.
Take a leisure walk after food, it aids digestion and promotes good sleep.
Have water at least half an hour before bedtime. Acid production in the stomach happens at night which can lead to reflux and bloating, therefore having water at night is important.
If possible, practise some pranayama on the bed while sleeping to calm your mind, reduce stress and promote deep sleep. Pranayama is the best way to increase alkalinity in the blood and promote brain health, keeping stress and anxiety at bay.
Always remember, the more peaceful you will make your night routine and the deeper your sleep is, your health will be optimum and disease-free.
