Disciple: Gurudev, what is the significance of the navel in the human body, and how is it related to the Manipura Chakra and the Enteric Nervous System (ENS)?
Yogi Anoop: The navel is the central point of the human body. It is not just a physical organ but also the core of energy, the nervous system, and the digestive system. Behind the navel lies the Manipura Chakra, considered the source of energy and the center of vitality.
The Enteric Nervous System (ENS), associated with the navel, is referred to as the “second brain” in modern science. When you understand the journey of the nervous system through the navel, you realize its direct influence on the small intestine, large intestine, liver, and digestive system. The gravitational pull of the Manipura Chakra regulates every process emanating from the navel. This regulation is so precise that the liver, the most active organ in the body, functions smoothly due to the navel’s gravitational force.
Modern science also acknowledges the direct relationship between the navel and the ENS with mental and physical health. When the navel loses balance, it impacts the entire digestive system, neural network, and even mental health. Thus, the navel should not just be seen as the body’s center but as the foundation for life’s functioning.
Disciple: Gurudev, the relationship between the ENS and the brain is referred to in science as the “gut-brain axis.” Could you explain this in simple terms?
Yogi Anoop: A very good question. The gut-brain axis means that our digestive system and brain are in constant communication. You can think of them as two key centers within the body.
The ENS, located around the navel and controlling the digestive system, communicates directly with the brain. If the navel becomes imbalanced (causing issues in the neural network), its first impact is seen on the brain. This is because it directly influences digestion and excretion. Pay attention: stress, anxiety, and emotional imbalances disrupt the digestive system, leading to problems like constipation, gas, or diarrhea.
If you delve deeper, you will understand that this connection between the navel and the brain is not just physical but also subtle and mental. Through yoga and pranayama practices, I activate the nerves in the navel area, improving not only digestion but also bringing mental peace. When the navel is balanced, the mind also remains stable.
Disciple: Gurudev, you have spoken about the significance of the navel in Ayurveda. Are there specific treatments or practices related to the navel that can improve health?
Yogi Anoop: In Ayurveda, the navel is referred to as the “center of the body.” It balances the body’s energy through the Manipura Chakra. Ayurveda, which views the navel as the ENS in modern science and recognizes its control over digestion and excretion, recommends specific treatments for balancing it, such as Abhyanga (oil massage).
The use of ghee, fat, or oil around the navel area, or even the consumption of specific oils at particular times, is suggested to relax the abdominal muscles. This relieves the digestive system and reduces the tension caused by contractions. The ancient practice of pouring ghee into the navel addresses issues like constipation, gas, and other intestinal problems. Drinking ghee is also highly beneficial but should always be done under the guidance of an experienced teacher.
You must also understand that energy contraction and expansion occur between the Manipura Chakra and the navel. When this balance is disrupted, other bodily functions, especially digestion and excretion, are affected. Yoga and Ayurveda help restore this balance effectively.
Disciple: Gurudev, are there specific yoga techniques that strengthen the navel and ENS?
Yogi Anoop: Absolutely. Yoga offers several techniques to balance the navel and the ENS. Key practices include Nadi Shodhana, Subtle Kapalbhati, and Navel Chakra Sadhana.
• Nadi Shodhana Pranayama balances the nervous system and improves blood flow in the navel region.
• Kapalbhati activates the nerves around the navel, enhancing the digestive system’s functionality. However, it should only be practiced with proper guidance from an experienced teacher, as incorrect practice can be harmful.
• Navel Chakra Sadhana is particularly effective in correcting navel displacement. I have been practicing this for nearly 24 years and have seen remarkable results.
These techniques activate the neural network of the navel, improving not only digestive problems but also mental peace and energy flow.
Disciple: Gurudev, you referred to the navel as the “second brain.” Does this mean the navel also controls our mental health?
Yogi Anoop: Yes, absolutely. I call the navel the “second brain” because it deeply influences not just the digestive system but also mental health. Through the navel and the ENS, several neurotransmitters like serotonin reach the brain.
Serotonin regulates emotions, happiness, and mental peace. When the navel is out of balance, it disrupts the functioning of these neurotransmitters, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression.
Through the techniques of yoga, pranayama, and Ayurveda, the neural network of the navel can be balanced. This not only improves the digestive system but also brings mental stability and peace.
Thus, the relationship between the navel and the ENS is not just physical but also the foundation for mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. Understanding the significance of the navel through yoga and Ayurveda and keeping it balanced is essential for overall well-being.
