What is madness? When is a person called mad, not generally but in scientific terms? When a person is unaware of himself and his surroundings, is that a state of madness? To some extent, you would agree, wouldn't you?
Today's world is in a state of madness. Why would I say this? I say this because when you observe people around you, they have little sense of what is happening with them and around them. They have lost track of time and are eating, sleeping, and working at their whim. The line between the personal and professional space has blurred like never before. An average person's level of anxiety today is as high as in a psychiatric patient in the 1950s, just imagine! After all this, would you still ask me why I say that most of us are operating in a state of madness and frenzy? I think it is plain for you to see, quite obvious, isn't it?
Most of us have stopped deriving meaning from simple pleasures in life and are striving hard to achieve material goals. Material goals are important - we need money to live, sustain and grow - but pouring ourselves completely into that cause, to an extent that day by day we wither away, is like going on a suicide mission.
I meet many people who say that they cannot stay alone, when they are idle, they begin to feel more anxious and depressed. "Please do not leave me alone, I do not want to be alone," is what most people would say. I would like to tell you that a complete sense of being is never afraid of being alone, in fact, it finds solace in passivity. Our mind and senses are galloping like horses and it has become difficult to slow down. That is why most of us find it difficult to sleep, because the mind is always racing. Mind you, the only two ways to give a complete recovery to a battered mind, soul and body is through deep sleep and meditation - absolutely no other alternative or substitute. And when you are not able to achieve both, how do you expect to be fully functional? Temporary mediums, such as junk food, alcohol, sex, et cetera, only numb the mind, rust it to an extent that a complete recovery looks far from possible.
It is madness to go to the extreme to realise your goals. The focus should not just be on the end goal but the entire journey and the vehicle as well. Your body and mind are the only vehicles that will support you in your journey called life and help you attain your goals. If you neglect the vehicle, how do you propose to complete the journey and reach your destination? Or are you okay to quit midway? When you try to achieve your goals by walking instead of running, you get time to feel and heal yourself. The mind gets a chance to understand the senses and the body - this is what I describe as the "mental resting period".
The mind, senses and the body get a chance to heal in this resting period and the result is the experience of deep peace and elimination from the mad rat race of life.
