Kriya Yoga
In Kriya-Yoga, the word Kriya fundamentally refers to a specific action (technique), while the word Yoga spiritually signifies separation. Here, separation means detachment from action itself. In essence, it is the process where the doer separates from the action they are performing, ultimately achieving a state of inactivity. This state of inactivity, where the doer is liberated from all actions, is known as complete liberation (Moksha).
In Raja Yoga, Kriya Yoga is viewed as a method derived from Mahavatar Babaji. This method is crafted through the combination of pranayama and visualization, which yields swift and powerful results. By uniting visualization and prana, it activates neurons in the spine and brain. Based on my experience, this practice of Kriya Yoga reactivates neurotransmitters in the spine and brain that might be dormant or less active.
Through the combined practice of visualization and pranayama, neurotransmitters in the spine and brain are activated, leading to an increase in serotonin—a chemical considered essential for mental stability. Just as Bhakti Yoga rapidly activates dopamine, which provides feelings of joy and pleasure, the Raja Yogic approach of Kriya Yoga enhances serotonin. This results in achieving mental stability and transcending thoughts in a very short time.
From my own experience, this method of Kriya Yoga has a significant impact on neurotransmitters rather than hormones. My experiments reveal that Kriya Yoga techniques influence the neurons more strongly than the glands. Note that glands release fluids and hormones into the bloodstream, which take time to show effects. However, through the joint practice of visualization and pranayama (Kriya Yoga), neurotransmitters in the brain and spine are activated, resulting in rapid effects.
Scientific Perspective:
Scientifically, serotonin in the brain functions primarily as a neurotransmitter, helping transmit signals between nerve cells. It regulates mood, emotions, sleep, appetite, and memory. Its concentration in the brain and nervous system is very low.
Serotonin in the Body:
About 90% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gut and blood platelets, where it functions as a hormone.
Spiritual Perspective:
From a spiritual standpoint, the practice of pranayama and visualization (Kriya Yoga) enhances the amount of serotonin, which is naturally present in very small quantities in the brain and nervous system. Activating it in the spine and brain improves neural activity, increasing serotonin levels. This helps achieve mental stability, which is freedom from the trade of thoughts and tendencies.
This stability can be compared to the brief thoughtlessness experienced during sleep. Through this method, one can achieve a state of deep sleep-like stillness while awake. Based on this principle, I always emphasize that this practice can quickly eliminate any mental or physical disorders. It can stabilize any imbalance (vata and pitta) in the body because serotonin’s increase brings stability.
I consider stability as the most critical factor for healing the body and brain. Even inflammation, wounds in the stomach, or other physical ailments can be healed through this. This is because most serotonin is found in the gut.
It is evident that any practice leading to mental stability not only heals the gut but also aids in the natural healing of all major parts of the body. However, it must be noted that the practice of Kriya Yoga should only be performed under the strict supervision of an experienced and logical guru. This is because it is a unique practice based on the combination of visualization and pranayama.
Some Misconceptions:
Most practitioners believe that Kriya Yoga primarily activates the pituitary and pineal glands. However, in my experience, serotonin activation is more significant. Let’s understand this with an example. Imagine adding a drop of red color (hormones) to a glass of water (blood); its diffusion throughout the water (body’s blood) occurs slowly. On the other hand, if an electrical current is passed through the water, its effect is instant. Similarly, Kriya Yoga increases the levels of chemical waves (serotonin), providing stability. Stability, in its true sense, means transcending emotions.
Finally, the method of Kriya Yoga sends electrical waves and chemical signals throughout the brain and body. This quiets and stabilizes the senses and mind completely. This state of stability allows the practitioner to overcome diseases and attain self-realization. It relaxes all the sensory and motor organs.
