The Spiritual Way To Resolve Sleep Issues

Sleep issues are almost everywhere these days, isn't it? What we do not understand is the fact that a prolonged problem of sleep can wreak havoc on our health to an unimaginable extent. The problem gets worse when a person begins to form a dependency on medications, drugs or other substances to sleep or improve its quality.

In my opinion, some of the primary causes of issues tied to sleep are rooted in mental and emotional turbulence as well as a topsy-turvy lifestyle. While 90 of 100 people suffer from sleep issues because of this, 10 people might find it difficult to sleep because of some underlying physical concern. Whatever the reason be, here we will try to get a resolution of the problem of sleep through yoga, pranayama and some other useful tips and tricks.

 1) Dinner must be done by 7 pm. It is seen that most people munch at nighttime to get some sleep. This is because when the digestive process starts, it gives sort of a high to the brain which makes a person feel drowsy. This is why we usually begin to feel drowsy after a rich and heavy meal. When the brain is not able to get any other means to relax, it goes after the easiest and most obvious one - food. However, this cycle only disrupts the sleep pattern further. Therefore, it is suggestive that the mind is put to rest with the help of some pranayama which also aids deep sleep.

2) Leisure walks must be taken every day for at least 30-40 minutes after eating. It aids digestion and also ensures that pressure, in the form of gas, does not impact the head. Drink sufficient water after walking.

3) People suffering from insomnia are extremely imaginative with vivid and elaborate thoughts. Due to the lack of management of visuals and thoughts in the innermost, this problem becomes serious, people suffering from such problems should not watch TV or any kind of screen at night. However, you will observe that such people like to curl up in bed and watch some movie or television show during bedtime so that their eyes get tired and they feel sleepy. This, on the other hand, does more damage. This is a lesser-known fact but let me break this to you, it is a myth that tired eyes lead to deep sleep, it absolutely does not. One must instead let the eyes loose and relax.

4) Yoga asanas play a huge role in providing adequate and balanced exercise to the body. Some of the important asanas include Surya Namaskar, Tadasana, Trikonasana, Pawanmuktasana, Shashanka Asana, Mandukasana, Ustrasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, Naukasana, Dhanurasana and Bhujangasana

5) Pranayama has proved to be very effective in calming the body, mind and nerves. For this Prashantkari Pranayama- Nadi Shodhana, Ujjayi, Sheetali, Sheetkari and Chandrabhedi etc. are useful. Below, I have described the method of practising Chandra Bhedi Pranayama:

Sit in a comfortable, meditation posture with spine, neck and head erect. Make sure your eyes are loose, relaxed and closed. Your body must be free from tension and relaxed.

Place the thumb of your right hand on the right nostril and the ring finger on the left nostril. Now, closing the right nostril with the thumb, take a long and deep breath in (purana) through the left nostril, hold the breath in (kumbhaka) for a comfortable period. Now, close the left nostril with the ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. This is one cycle of pranayama. Practice it thirty times in total.

Tip: Those suffering from Kapha disease and depression should not practice it.

6) When a person faces sleep-related issues, they are not able to relax their mind and body. Thoughts give so much tension and stress that it is not possible to loosen or relax it, which, again, gives rise to poor or compromised sleep and the loop goes on!

Therefore, meditation and pranayama right before are considered extremely effective in such people. In meditation, your senses, most of all the eyes and jaws, are relaxed. In meditation, if both these parts are loosened, then no one can stop the patient from going into a deep sleep.

7) Do not take any such thing at night which will further excite the brain such as fried and spicy food. Eat less than your hunger. Food should be taken only when there are hunger pangs and at regular, fixed times. Strictly abstain from caffeinated drinks and intoxicants, smoking and drinking, especially at night.
