Do you know how our thoughts impact various parts of our body? Sounds surprising, right? Countless thoughts traverse in and out of our minds throughout the day, we are almost always unaware of this to and fro of millions of thoughts. Rarely is the science behind our thoughts and their impact on our body talked about. Today, I aim to demystify this aspect.
One of the easiest ways to exhibit a correlation between thoughts and bodily functions is by monitoring our heartbeat. Have you not noticed changes in heartbeats while experiencing different emotions? Even our breathing becomes heavy when we are in a stressful situation. This is because of numerous changes in our body when our thoughts trigger reactions and activate certain hormones.
If you notice hyperactive people, all their actions are very swift, from the way they talk to the way they change the gear of their vehicle. I cannot emphasise the importance of slowing down more. There is a pressing need to slow down in today's world. Unfortunately, all of us have been programmed to always be in such a hurry, as a result, we are not fully paying attention to any moment, or act.
That's why I always ask to slow down the movement of your senses. When you slow down the movement of your senses, the heart and the respiratory rate becomes normal.
You can achieve the same by practising the following:
Speak slowly, do not rush
Work with full attention, not in haste
Keep your body and eyes relaxed while working
Pay attention to experience while working
Observe your thoughts, do not get tangled in them; let them pass and do not be swept by them and react
Following such practices, coupled with regular deep breathing, meditation and pranayama, helps avoid unnecessary changes in the rate of the heart's functioning while also keeping anxiety in check. Although the heart is a reflexive muscle, it spends most of its time with thoughts and when we practice calming the senses, the heart automatically maintains its natural rhythm.
