Hoarding May Lead To Depression

The road to a healthier, fuller and more meaningful life is to let go and not hold onto things. In this blog, I shall talk about hoarding things and how it can lead to depression. By hoarding I don't literally mean the act of hoarding but to keep on holding on to things.

If you keep on letting thoughts accumulate for long in your head, it may trigger a host of mental issues including anxiety and depression. The same holds true for our bodies as well, if an issue persists for long, soon it turns into ailments.

Accumulation of feelings and thoughts begins to damage the brain. This is because the innermost feelings get filled more than necessary, due to which they start fighting among themselves, and because of that fighting, self-satisfaction is almost exhausted. Therefore it is also necessary to throw out those feelings which are overwhelming.

Let us take an example:

After collecting things in a house for years, there is a feeling of lack of space inside the house. The occupant starts feeling suffocated. The main reason is that the stuffing of things is getting too much, things occupy more space than necessary, the result is that after a few years, the occupant also begins to feel the lack of space. The same is applicable to thoughts and feelings as well. Unnecessary thoughts and feelings hamper emotional and spiritual growth while also adversely impacting mental health.

There comes a time when a person begins to feel that thoughts are extremely powerful, so powerful that the relentless, continuous chatter of the brain hampers everything, and disrupts a person's routine, sleep cycle and vital aspects of daily life. A person, in such a case, begins to feel that these habits can never be ended. This is the reason why he feels like taking the help of someone or something else, such as alcohol, food, et cetera. He starts feeling helpless and lonely in his own mind and body and experiences shortness of breath, and an inability to express himself. Ultimately life becomes meaningless.

Due to ignorance, man is trapped in his own making. To get out of it, he weaves a web of accumulating things, but instead of reducing the problems, the problems become formidable. Pay attention to the problem that is being caused by possessiveness and how one can find a long-term, sustainable solution.

Fire cannot be put out by fire but from an opposite element. In the same manner, it is foolish to try to get rid of sadness and depression by hoarding or accumulating things - the trick is to let go of expectations, anger, thoughts, and worldly entanglements.

Make a note of the following Tips:

  • Pay attention not only to the collection of objects but to the collection of emotions.

  • The accumulation of emotions is very dangerous, knowledge is necessary to reduce it to a minimum. Practice meditation under the guidance of an experienced guru.

  • Minimize the accumulation of thoughts and feelings during the nighttime. It's best not to watch the screen.

  • Avoid excess food during nighttime. Practice loosening your muscles during the meal, which will eliminate the over-reliance on food at night.

  • Before sleeping practice yoga nidra on the bed. It helps in the loosening of thoughts, feelings and muscles.

  • Eat foods that do not cause constipation, healthy bowel movement is also necessary.

  • Be sure to give charity and service, you will find peace
