North to South Airflow: A Natural Source of Freedom from Diseases:
Student’s Question:
Guruji, why is the airflow from north to south considered so special? How does it impact physical and mental health?
Yogi Anoop’s Answer:
Dear student, this question is both profound and significant. The airflow from north to south can be understood as a deep connection between nature and the body. Let us explore this through the perspectives of spirituality, yoga, science, and other viewpoints.
1. Spiritual Perspective
The brain, located in the northern direction of the body, is predominantly associated with the elements of water, air, and space. Note that all five senses are surrounded by these elements. The messages received by the five senses are processed effectively by the brain due to the properties of these three elements.
For example, sound cannot be absorbed by a stone, but it can be absorbed in water because water, containing air and space, provides empty spaces for absorption. Similarly, the brain absorbs external messages received through the senses and transmits them throughout the body.
The brain, situated in the body’s northern part, naturally transmits external messages to the southern part of the body. This natural process supports health, as the airflow reduces inflammation in the body. The coolness of this airflow, passing through water bodies, soothes the body.
From a perspective of knowledge, all these messages are filtered through wisdom and intellect before reaching the body. This airflow calms the body’s organs to their natural state, awakening their innate ability to fight diseases. In yoga, this is referred to as “Apana Vayu.”
2. Natural Perspective
In nature, the flow from north to south holds significance. The Himalayas in the north, known for their glaciers and solid water, are a source of pure airflow moving southward.
• Rivers, winds, and energy flows all follow this direction.
• This airflow naturally regulates body heat, especially in the intestines located in the southern part of the body. It balances digestion and helps expel toxins.
• This directional flow creates a natural balance between earth and space, maintaining the body’s harmony.
3. Ayurvedic Perspective
Ayurveda views this from a therapeutic lens. Drinking water, airflow, and space, combined with “Apana Vayu,” are considered essential for life. If the airflow from the north is dry and warm, it may cause joint pain, dryness, and related issues. However, if it provides coolness, the body naturally expels toxins, waste, and impurities.
• Cooling the intestines: This airflow calms excess heat in the intestines, strengthening digestion.
• Detoxification: Apana Vayu expels waste materials like feces, urine, sweat, and other toxins.
• Energy flow: According to Ayurveda, a proper flow of this air strengthens and balances the body’s vital energy (Prana).
Any obstruction in this flow may lead to issues such as Vata Dosha (gas, joint pain), Pitta Dosha (intestinal inflammation), and Kapha Dosha (congestion).
4. Scientific Perspective
The brain, located in the north, is the central hub of the nervous system.
• Messages from the brain flow southward through the nervous system, calming and relaxing the body. This relaxation reactivates the natural energy of the organs.
• The brain, similar to a cold glacier, sends airflows that reduce inflammation in the body and restore the natural functionality of organs. From my experience, reducing inflammation is the foundation of healing diseases.
• Motor nervous system: The system transmitting signals from the brain to the body is stabilized by the cooling nature of this airflow.
• Neurologically, this airflow delivers energy and nutrition to every cell. Disruptions in this flow increase the likelihood of mental and physical illnesses.
Ways to Maintain Balance
1. Meditation and Pranayama: Practicing Pranayama can help regulate Apana Vayu, creating balance in body and mind.
2. North-Facing Meditation: While meditating facing north is said to purify this airflow, I believe the focus should be on calming and stabilizing the brain (northern direction).
3. Ayurvedic Treatments: Through diet and herbal remedies, excess heat in the intestines and body can be managed.
Ultimately, the north-to-south airflow is not merely a physical element but a key source of balance for our life, energy, and consciousness. Maintaining its harmony through meditation, Pranayama, and a pure diet is essential for physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Incorporate this wisdom into your life and ensure the unobstructed flow of this air. This will provide you with a lasting experience of peace, strength, and balance.
