"I spoke to my therapist and she talked about some grounding techniques for days whenever I feel super anxious. Very simple, like touch something or smell something, count to 30, et cetera," said a 20-something girl to her friend while casually sipping on her coffee. I am guilty of overhearing them. In this blog post I shall talk about some techniques that may be similar to the "grounding techniques" this girl was talking about with her friend.
When we are surrounded by negativity, nothing or no one seems pleasant. We tend to assume even neutral things as negative, isn't it? In this blog, I shall talk about a few easy ways through which you can begin to feel amid a bout of negativity, anxiety or overwhelmness.
Move
Movement is associated with change and if you want to change your mood you have got to start moving, do some activity. Note that when one is depressed, one does not feel like doing a lot, everyday basic tasks like brushing hair or walking the dog seems herculean. This is precisely why you MUST get up at that very moment. Just take a stroll in your alley, or go run errands, hit the gym or cook some meal, not much to my surprise, I guarantee you, you will feel better if not fantabulous.
Breathe in, breath out
You can take it literally or think of it as practicing pranayama. When met with an overwhelming situation, one must take deep long breaths for 5-10 minutes. If you practice pranayama, nothing like it to beat a sullen mood.
Nature Therapy
Get some sunshine, walk on the grass, get one with nature. It is the best way to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.
Music
I need not say this out loud, singing and listening to music is known to help alleviate mood and release happy hormones, just be sure not to tune into the sad tunes.
Meditate
There is no dearth of clinical studies elaborating the role of meditation in alleviating mood, beating anxiety, depression and a lot more. In the beginning, it may feel like a challenge, but once you ease into it and practice it for a few times, I can guarantee you that you will begin to take out time for it.
