Constipation: Towards Relaxation

Solution to Constipation Lies in Relaxation After Anal Contraction

- Yogi Anoop

The anal opening is the final gateway for the elimination of waste. If this gateway gets blocked, imagine what would happen to the body and mind. Constipation is the name given to the problem of this final gateway. Usually, in the initial years, this issue is not taken seriously. The person enjoys the process of filling, that is, the process of intake. They think that as long as the processes of intake and digestion are ongoing, elimination will naturally happen eventually. After all, there is no other path for the expulsion of waste.

Perhaps for this reason, the individual does not consider elimination as a problem, but its seriousness is felt only when there is bleeding from that area. It is then they realize that in life, it is not just eating that is important but even more important is digestion and, above all, the elimination of waste. The person then rushes in search of a solution.

Understanding the Root Cause of the Problem

Before finding a solution to any problem, it is essential to understand its cause. Here, I will focus only on the psychological causes.

Those who are addicted to intake (eating) generally also develop a habit of accumulating things. With a deeper perspective, it becomes evident that those with a tendency to accumulate often develop a tendency to contract various organs. For instance, the intestines, anal opening, urinary tract, duodenum, diaphragm, and even the stomach begin to show signs of contraction.

Even if the individual consumes substances that aid in bowel movements, no improvement is seen in their excretion process. This is because the tendency of contraction has already developed in the body.

Solution to the Problem: Eliminating the Tendency to Contract

If the tendency to contract is eliminated, then a solution to constipation becomes possible. This has been proven through numerous experiments and experiences. One yogic practice that addresses this is known as ‘anal contraction.’

However, a question may arise: how can practicing anal contraction help someone who already has a habit of contracting the anal area? Shouldn’t the problem worsen instead of improving? But that is not the case.

The purpose of anal contraction is not to increase contraction but to enhance relaxation through the process of contraction. This practice is done so that the individual can experience a state of relaxation following contraction. In yoga, stretching of muscles during physical exercises is not done to develop a habit of tension in the muscles. Instead, it is done so that the body can easily return to a relaxed state after the stretch, allowing the individual to experience the absence of tension.

Through anal contraction, relaxation is induced in the anal region. This relaxation resolves all issues related to the anal opening. Additionally, the habit of contraction in the brain, which creates tension, also diminishes. The brain attains deep peace, leading to restful and soothing sleep.

This restful sleep further relaxes the intestines. Ultimately, this relaxation and rest rejuvenate not only the intestines but the entire body.

The Importance of Mula Bandha

In yoga, ‘Mula Bandha,’ a practice of contracting the anal opening, is taught as an effective method. This practice brings about relaxation in the anal area through contraction, leading to a feeling of relaxation in the intestines. This method not only resolves constipation but also re-energizes the body and mind.

Anal contraction is a powerful yogic practice that can solve issues like constipation. This practice focuses on bringing relaxation after contraction, which helps improve mental and physical health.

The Method of Practicing Mula Bandha

Mula Bandha is the practice of contracting the anal opening, which, when done correctly, relieves constipation and other related issues. The steps to practice it are as follows:

1. Choose a Place: Sit in a quiet and clean place. Sitting in Padmasana, Sukhasana, or Vajrasana is most appropriate. If sitting in these postures is not possible, you can sit in a comfortable position. Keep your spine straight and the body relaxed. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

2. Contract the Anal Opening: Slowly contract your anal opening inward, as if you are trying to hold back the urge to pass stool. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds. Then, return to a normal state.

3. Induce Relaxation in the Anal Area: Now, gradually release the anal opening and return to a relaxed state. Focus on experiencing this relaxation in your mind. This relaxation induces a state of thoughtlessness in the brain. The longer this state of thoughtlessness lasts, the more effective it is in resolving issues related to the anal opening and eliminating the tendency to contract.

Repeat the contraction for a short while, then relax again. Remember, the purpose is not contraction; the act of contraction is done only to allow for a longer and deeper experience of relaxation.

4. Include Breathing and Meditation: After practicing for a few months, incorporate breathing exercises and, later, meditation into the practice under the guidance of an experienced teacher.

By following this practice, not only does the problem of constipation resolve, but the habit of contraction diminishes over time, leading to a healthier and more relaxed mind and body.
