Diseases that stem from 9 types of obstructions
Maharishi Patanjali had described nine types of obstruction in the path of Sadhna - रोग, अकर्मण्यता, प्रमाद, आलस्य, वैराग्यहीनता, भ्रान्तिदर्शनम, अलब्धभूमिकत्व, अनवस्थितत्व. In simple English, these can be described as - disease, indolence, debauchery, laziness, lack of detachment, delusionality, lack of interest due to unavailability of desired result and non-existentiality. These are the obstructions and their signs and manifestations are described below.
1- Disease or any kind of ailment is an obstruction for a sadhak
2- Laziness also acts as an obstruction in sadhna
3- Those who are engaged in sadhna must not keep doubt in their heart, it is an obstruction.
4- A careless attitude cannot lead to a fulfilling sadhna, doing it for the heck of it will not bear any fruit.
5- Debauchery, constantly chasing the material world will never result in the proper realisation of sadhna.
6 The habit of enjoyment contains a lack of detachment. This is the biggest obstacle in meditation.
7- Perceiving something wrong as right and vice versa is described as delusion and it cannot lead to proper sadhna.
8- When a sadhak is not able to get the desired results, his passion to continue pursuing sadhna deteriorates, this is a very big obstacle in achieving meditative progress.
9- Non existentiality is when the mind is not able to focus on one thing, it is constantly jumping from one thought to another. This monkey mind is one of the biggest obstacles for a sadhak.
In order to put an end to these obstructions, a focussed mind with deep concentration is very important. The continous, relentless, persistent practice of pranayama and meditation is the only way to give direction to the monkey mind, channel its energy and keep it focussed. Once the mind is focussed, it becomes unwavered in the face of temporary obstructions, it becomes sharp, agile and bolstered to face the gravest of adversities
